If you’ve been considering facial cosmetic surgery, you may be a candidate for facial fillers, which can help restore some of your youthfulness. What are Facial Fillers?

Facial fillers, also known as dermal fillers, are injectable compounds designed to restore youthfulness and volume to the facial area. They can be used for everything from recontouring the face to diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It’s considered a “rejuvenation” treatment, and while it is certainly not an alternative to a facelift, brow lift, or eye lift, it can help you get the results you seek when visiting a facial cosmetic surgeon.

Debunking the Myths

The two most common facial fillers used by facial cosmetic surgeons today are Juvederm and Restylane. Both have been proven safe and effective in numerous clinical trials, but there are still some myths surrounding them. Here are a few of the most common.

  • It’ll really hurt. The best facial cosmetic surgeons will make your comfort a priority. That’s why you’ll receive a topical anesthetic before the filler injections. You may feel a slight bit of discomfort, and perhaps a slight pinch, but facial fillers should never cause pain.
  • There’s too much downtime. Depending on the area of treatment and your unique reaction, you may experience anything from a bit of redness at the injection site to mild bruising and swelling. Applying a cold compress to the area can minimize this, and most people return to work after getting facial fillers the same day.
  • The effects will be permanent. None of the injectables on the market today – including Restylane – are permanent. The effects may last up to four months on your lips or up to a year on the inner part of your eye, where your tear trough is located. You’ll need maintenance treatments to maintain your new look.
  • It’ll be obvious. It’s a common misconception that it’s easy to spot people who have had filler treatments. While this may be true in a small handful of cases when patients want a more drastic change, your results will be very subtle. What’s more, it takes time for the filler to “settle” and absorb once injected, so your new, fresh look will gradually improve over time, making it even less noticeable.

Are You a Good Candidate for Facial Fillers?

Unlike surgical procedures, which include things like facelifts and brow lifts, the risks involved with facial fillers are minimal. This means that almost anyone is a great candidate for fillers. If you cringe at the sight of wrinkles on your face, thinning lips, or even cheekbones that aren’t as pronounced as they once were, facial fillers just may be perfect for you.
