Dr. Kristina Zakhary makes Rhinoplasty a large focus of her practice in Calgary and Edmonton. Rhinoplasty surgery, commonly referred to as a Nose Job, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed by facial plastic Surgeons. Dr. Zakhary has extensive training and expertise in both cosmetic and reconstructive nasal surgery.
Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery performed on the nose, and is one of the top-requested procedures, given that your nose is the central part on your face, so its size and shape affect your appearance. Nasal surgery can reduce the size, reshape or augment the size of a person's nose, to create pleasant facial harmony and boost self esteem. Dr. Zakhary has extensive training and expertise in both cosmetic and reconstructive nasal surgery.
When choosing nose surgery for the first time, it’s referred to as primary. Thus, primary rhinoplasty is nose reshaping surgery performed on a nose which has never been operated on before for aesthetic purposes.
On the contrary, when people undergo nose surgery to improve breathing will typically have what’s known as a septoplasty. This procedure to straighten and clear nasal passages deals with the central bone and cartilage that make up the septum. If combining this functional improvement with visible, aesthetic changes, then it will be termed, “septorhinoplasty.”
No matter how simple or complex the procedure, rhinoplasty surgery needs excellent skill and precision to get the best possible results.
As you age, your skin becomes less elastic and your face may change shape. Contrary to popular belief, the nose does not continue to grow as we age, but rather the tip will most likely sag, which can make the nose look droopy or accentuate a dorsal hump. In this case, you may wish to have a rhinoplasty to lift and shape the tip or remove a dorsal hump. Aging is not the main reason to have a rhinoplasty surgery. Most rhinoplasty patients wish to have rhinoplasty surgery to reduce a dorsal hump or refine and shape the nasal tip.
Individuals who may benefit from a rhinoplasty include those who have a nose that is out of proportion with the rest of the face, have a wide or round nasal tip, droopy and/or long nasal tip, or have a crooked nose from natural asymmetry or trauma.
It is important to remember that ultimately, cosmetic surgery should be considered a personal decision: do it for yourself and not to please others, you should have realistic expectations for improvement and not perfection, and should be discussed with a qualified surgeon.
Children under the age of 18 are not eligible for rhinoplasty. Additionally, those with medical conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, bleeding disorders, autoimmune disease, or an active infection are not typically eligible for the procedure either. It is also very important to have good psychological health and reasonable expectations.
Dr. Zakhary performs a Closed Mini Dissection Rhinoplasty in which surgery is performed by making small incisions inside the nose, where they cannot be seen. Your surgeon will then separate the skin from the underlying cartilage and bone in the required areas, reshape the cartilage and bone, and may also use cartilage or other graft material to add support and definition to the nose. At the end, the incisions are closed. Tapes and a splint is placed on the nose reduce swelling of the nose during the healing process.
The results of rhinoplasty vary depending on the individual, but generally, the surgery can improve the appearance of your nose, alter its size and shape, narrow its bridge, reduce the size of your nostrils, and improve the overall symmetry of your face.
In some cases, it be performed with Septoplasty surgery if needed, which can also improve breathing problems caused by structural defects inside the nose.
While rhinoplasty is, as a whole, a safe procedure, it does carry a few risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, numbness, asymmetry, and risk of revision surgery (minor tweaks to improve the result).
Other risks include anesthesia risks, changes in sensation, and difficulty breathing.
Patients should be at least 17-18 years of age before undergoing rhinoplasty, although 18 is more widely considered the general cut-off for younger patients unless there is a medical or psychological benefit to performing the procedure early.
It is important to note that age is not the only factor to consider when determining whether or not you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty. Your overall health, physical maturity, and emotional readiness should also be taken into consideration.
The best time of year to get a nose job is typically whenever you have the time to rest during your recovery so that it will be easier for you in the healing process.
However, at the end of the day, you should always consult with a board-certified facial plastic surgeon to determine the best timing for your individual nose job.
The duration of a nose job can vary depending on the complexity of the procedure. On average, the surgery can take between two and four hours.
